X-Rays
An X-ray is a quick procedure used to capture an image of the inside of your body. It is particularly effective for looking at the bones and can be helpful in diagnosing and detecting a range of conditions. X-rays use ionising radiation which passes through the body, which cannot be seen or felt.
Problems that may be detected during an X-ray include:
- bone fractures and breaks
- tooth problems, such as loose teeth and dental abscesses
- scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine)
- non-cancerous and cancerous bone tumours
- lung problems, such as pneumonia and lung cancer
- heart problems, such as heart failure
MRI
MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of your body. It is especially helpful for soft tissue imaging and investigating conditions affecting the brain, spine, bones and joints.
DEXA Scans
A DEXA scan, also known as a bone mineral density scan, uses low dose x rays to see how strong, or dense, your bones are. They are often used to diagnose or assess your risk of osteoporosis. It is a quick and painless scan.
CT Scans
CT stands for computed tomography and uses ionising radiation to take detailed pictures of the inside of your body. It is usually used for diagnosis, frequently in trauma or for cancer, and to monitor how your body is responding to certain types of treatment.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses ultrasound waves to produce specific images of various parts of your body. It is very good for looking at soft tissues and some of our internal abdominal organs, and is used frequently in children and babies. It is completely safe in pregnancy.
